‘Formed in 1954 by the merger of the Ministry of Food and the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. Food’s administrative history dates back to 1916 when the first ministry for food control was established. It was abolished in 1921 but reappeared in 1938 (as the Ministry of Food)/ Agriculture and Fisheries goes back even further: 1919 saw the creation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, replacing the existing Board of Agriculture and Fisheries. Responsibility for food safety was hived off from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food in 2000 with the creation of the Food Standards Agency’.
